How to Prepare Your Home for a Cleaning Visit

Little Nest Cleaning · 2026-10-09

You don't need to clean before the cleaner comes. But ten minutes of prep gets you a noticeably better result, because every minute spent moving your stuff is a minute not spent cleaning.

Do this before we arrive

  • Pick up the floors. Clothes, toys, shoes, cords. Cleaners work around clutter, which means the floor under it doesn't get done.
  • Clear the counters. Mail, dishes, small appliances you don't use daily. A clear counter gets wiped edge to edge.
  • Put away valuables and paperwork. Not because of trust, but so nothing gets moved and misplaced.
  • Secure pets. Friendly dogs are great, but vacuums and open doors are not. A closed room or a crate works.
  • Leave out any products you want used. Our cleaners bring their own supplies. If you prefer a specific product on a specific surface, set it out with a note.

Tell us about

  • Entry: key, code, lockbox, garage, or whether you'll be home
  • Rooms to skip (a home office, a nursery with a sleeping baby)
  • Surfaces that need care, like unsealed stone, oiled wood or a glass cooktop
  • Alarm codes and anything that beeps

What you don't need to do

Don't pre-clean. Don't scrub the shower so the cleaner "doesn't see it." Don't apologize for the state of the house. That's the job, and we price it as a flat rate so you never pay extra for a normal messy week.
